In countries affected by conflict and war, Women for Women International (WfWI) supports the most marginalized women to earn and save money, improve health and well-being, influence decisions in their home and community and connect to networks for support. By utilizing skills, knowledge, and resources, she is able to create sustainable change for herself, her family, and community.

Since 1993, Women for Women International (WfWI) has helped over 500,000 marginalized women in countries affected by war and conflict. We directly work with women in eight countries, offering support, tools, and access to life-changing skills to move from crisis and poverty to stability and economic self-sufficiency.

Purpose:

WfWI is seeking a Regional Communications Coordinator. A key focus for our 2020-2030 global strategic plan is to increase the capacity within Women for Women International Country Offices for communications work, to support the global organization and in-country strategies. This is a new one-year pilot role, to help us achieve the following ambitions:

  • Produce real-time content from our programmes to improve our global communications and fundraising activity
  • Be nimble and responsive so we can leverage the news agenda to raise the voices of women we serve
  • Train spokespeople and key staff for global and in-country media work and in storytelling and multimedia asset collection

The Regional Communications Coordinator reports directly to the Director of Communications and External Engagement, HQ (Washington, DC). This role works closely with the global communications team and country offices to create and collect compelling content including photos, videos and stories for the organization. The Regional Communiactions Coordinator is responsible for leading the implementation of global communications strategies and campaigns in the countries where we work.

The ideal candidate has previous experience in storytelling and is comfortable diving into fast-moving campaigns and communications plans. As a key member of the global communications team, this candidate will work with country office staff on storytelling and message trainings.

This position requires up to 40% travel to our offices in Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan. The position is based in Africa with flexibility on exact location.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Implement our global content collection strategy in country offices with guidance from HQ
  • Collect and produce compelling content from the field including photos, videos and stories
  • Help coordinate global communication campaigns for country offices as required
  • Manage the organization’s brand and messaging strategies for the country offices
  • Conduct regular message and storytelling trainings with country office staff
  • Conduct media training with staff from country offices identified as spokespeople and assist in briefing and preparing them for media opportunities (global and regional)
  • Build a network of local photographers and videographers to assist with content collection
  • Assist in information gathering for rapid response communications
  • Stay current on communications best practices and technologies and help apply them within contexts of the countries we work in. 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelors degree in relevant field required
  • Minimum of 5 years of  experience in communications, journalism or related field required. Minimum of 3 years experience in a global organization
  • Excellent writing and message development skills
  • Expert level knowledge in photography
  • Experience in collecting videos using smartphone or DSLR
  • Previous work on global communication campaigns required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; working knowledge of a language of WfWI’s country teams (French, Kiswahili, etc.) highly desirable; knowledge of other local languages would be an advantage
  • Experience working in conflict-affected areas and with vulnerable populations
  • Ability to work within a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic team and understand the challenges of operating in insecure environments
  • Good judgment and problem solving skills, positive attitude, demonstrated willingness to take initiative especially in changing security contexts, political dynamics and budgetary shifts
  • Self-motivated and goal/deadline oriented
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a remote setting, to juggle multiple priorities, coordinate with multiple stakeholders in other locations, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a global team, and a willingness to roll up your sleeves to help colleagues
  • Ability to be open to feedback and to respond to feedback creatively
  • Passionate about using storytelling techniques to champion women’s rights
  • Understanding of women’s rights issues and international development required.
  • Commitment to and respect for Women for Women International’s mission and values
  • Ability to travel to country offices (extensive travel required)
  • Strong computer skills in MS Word, Excel, internet, email applications
