Women for Women International has the ambition to dramatically grow their global community to support programming that has been proven to be transformative for women survivors of war in fragile and conflict affected countries. Central to this growth, the U.S. Executive Director/VP MDC leads Women for Women International’s private fundraising/philanthropy efforts in the United States, and is responsible for attracting, retaining, and mobilizing both grassroots and high-profile supporters.
This is a highly strategic role that not only leads on external engagement, individual, corporate, and family foundation giving strategies for the United States but also plays a key role in global brand management. (Government grants and large institutional partners are managed through the Global Programs Department). Reporting directly to the CEO, the U.S. Executive Director/VP MDC is a member of the global leadership team and collaborates with our global teams and an engaged Board of Directors.
This role holds a unique opportunity: The U.S. Executive Director/VP MDC joins at a pivotal moment for WfWI as they kick off an ambitious new 10 year growth strategy. The Washington, D.C. office currently serves simultaneously as the Headquarters for the Global Organization and the home of the US Fundraising and Engagement team. WfWI is looking for a hands-on leader who values people and will help inspire, build and shape a new strategy, while working with a multicultural and diverse team of people and Global Board members, such as WFWI’s UK Ambassador & Chair of Fundraising, Emma Grede. The exciting focus of this position is in their new strategy which aims to double individual major gifts and institutional grants with the ultimate goal of enabling greater transformation in the lives of the women in which WfWI serve.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The U.S. Executive Director/VP MDC will have the following key responsibilities:
- Increasingly take on representation and leadership within the US, including as external spokesperson, in negotiations with partners, and leading the US team.
- Understand and become an authoritative voice and compelling representative of Women for Women International’s mission, history, values, culture, policies, programs, and finances.
Strategy and Direction
Create and integrated marketing, development, and communications program that advances WfWI's goals:
- Provide strategic direction to Directors for the development of plans to increase visibility, awareness, and excitement and lay the foundation for expanded giving.
- Create a strong fundraising strategy that ensures that all the elements of WfWI’s development model—including sponsorships, small donors, major giving, and institutional support—are effectively integrated and leveraged to maximize engagement and revenue.
- Lead teams in the development new sources of revenue to advance our mission, including brand partnerships, corporate engagement, fee for service, opening in new markets or other innovations.
- Identify and evaluate opportunities for new forms of collaboration within WfWI and new forms of outreach to demographic communities of potential donors.
- Formulate specific objectives and metrics and continually evaluate the Marketing and Development programs against them.
- Ensure the alignment of Marketing and Development initiatives with WfWI’s grassroots mission and strategic vision.
- Clearly articulate industry best practices and ensure they are appropriately adapted to WfWI’s mission and culture.
- As a member of the senior executive team, provide vital input on strategic and operational planning and positioning for the organization.
- Steer the design and growth of an individual major gifts pipeline by ensuring that assets are aggressively leveraged, that an effective moves management process is clearly developed, and that the team of major and principal gifts officers is well supported.
- Provide strategic direction and oversight for a high-level family foundation and corporate giving program.
- Collaborate with the CEO and Board to provide guidance and support for high-level relationship- building and solicitations.
- Participate directly in securing support by identifying and closing significant gifts.
Marketing and Communications
- Provide strategic direction for marketing strategies that broaden and deepen support among prospective and actual partners and donors.
- Develop brand positioning that best service our mission/goals and distinguish the organization within the sector.
- Expand and diversify participation in sponsorships to provide mission-critical support for women enrolled in training WfWI initiatives.
- Steer the development of a robust direct mail and digital giving program.
- Ensure the creation of compelling donor communications and stewardship materials that advance the WfWI brand, including social media and website.
- Overseeing the development of the global brand, including with Country offices and – through licensing agreements - with our UK, Germany, Bosnia, Kosovo and Rwanda affiliates.
Team Building and Management
- Provide steady, strong, and supportive leadership for a staff of close to 30, ensuring clear and effective decision-making and communication within an inclusive culture.
- Foster camaraderie and collaboration throughout the department while modelling the cultivation of collegial relationships across all levels—with donors, Board and volunteer leadership, colleagues, and vendors.
- Establish performance measures and consistently evaluate the effectiveness of the entire program, making adjustments as necessary.
- Generate and manage the MDC budget in a way that efficiently utilizes WfWI resources and maximizes return on investment.
- Contribute to the building of a truly global team and organization across our Country Offices, National Partners in Rwanda, Kosovo and Bosnia, and our UK and Germany offices.
Required Competencies Skills and Qualifications:
- At least 10 years senior leadership experience, with 5 years in development and marketing.
- Record of leading, managing, and integrating an ambitious, forward-thinking development and marketing program that advanced an organization’s mission and financial goals.
- Extensive direct marketing experience, including a sophisticated understanding of how to design a small donor program to generate revenue and build a major gifts pipeline.
- Outstanding major gift fundraising record in a complex non-profit environment, with a demonstrated ability to build a donor pipeline, secure six- and seven-figure gifts, and increase giving levels and revenue.
- Extensive experience cultivating and managing relationships with high-level donors and volunteers, including effectively engaging them in the fundraising process.
- Experience working with foundations, including identifying foundation prospects, cultivating and stewarding foundation relationships, and overseeing the development of proposals.
- Keen understanding of how to use creative content to drive marketing and development.
- Strong finance management skills, including profit and loss responsibility for $10M+ budgets.
- Knowledge of and passion for women’s issues, international development, and/or humanitarian response, with the ability to serve as a compelling ambassador for these issues.
- Demonstrated ability to build a well-supported, carefully nurtured, and high-performing team.
- Clear evidence of a management style that emphasizes collaboration and inclusivity.
- Ability to work effectively with and gain the respect of multiple constituencies, including senior executives and decision-makers, individual and institutional partners at all levels, staff and team members across departments, and marketing and communications vendors.
- Calm, focus, and maturity, with the ability to organize complex work by a variety of contributors and to remain gracious under pressure.
- Demonstrated ability to model a positive attitude that emphasizes possibilities and solutions.
- Flexibility and creativity in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
- Strong belief in and modelling of WfWI values with a deep respect for and understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion.

- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
Terms of Appointment:
This is a full-time position with the successful candidate being contracted on a permanent basis. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
